Barcelona infrastructure and communications

Excellence in Execution

Mercury Barcelona's project portfolio demonstrates our capability to deliver communication solutions for demanding applications. From underground infrastructure to major sporting events, these projects required technical excellence, project management discipline, and commitment to client success.

Each project presented unique challenges that required customized solutions, reflecting our belief that effective communication systems must be designed for specific requirements rather than forced into standard templates.

Barcelona Metro Line 9

Barcelona's Metro Line 9 represents one of Europe's most ambitious urban rail projects, featuring deep tunnel sections and advanced automated train operation. Mercury Barcelona was selected to provide digital radio communication infrastructure for this critical system.

The project required engineering radio coverage through kilometers of deep tunnel at depths exceeding 80 meters in some sections. We deployed radiating cable systems designed for the tunnel geometry and specified equipment capable of supporting both operational communications and emergency services access.

Coordination with civil works, track installation, and systems integration contractors required careful project management throughout the extended construction period. The resulting communication network provides reliable coverage throughout the line, supporting train operations, maintenance activities, and emergency response capabilities.

High-Speed Rail Tunnel Communications

Spain's high-speed rail network includes numerous tunnels that require specialized communication coverage. Mercury Barcelona has delivered communication systems for several AVE tunnel projects, enabling both construction-phase coordination and permanent operational communications.

These projects demanded solutions capable of supporting rail-specific communication protocols while providing interoperability with standard radio systems used by construction contractors. We engineered systems that could be installed progressively as tunnel construction advanced, then transitioned to permanent operational configurations.

Working in active rail construction environments required strict adherence to safety protocols and coordination with multiple contractors. Our experience with tunnel environments allowed us to anticipate challenges and deliver systems that met demanding schedule requirements.

FINA World Swimming Championships 2013

The 2013 FINA World Swimming Championships brought elite aquatic competition to Barcelona, requiring comprehensive event communication systems across multiple venues. Mercury Barcelona provided radio communication equipment and technical support for event operations.

The project scope included communication systems for event management, security coordination, medical response, and media operations. We deployed hundreds of radio units with programming that enabled different operational groups to communicate within their teams while allowing coordination between groups when needed.

On-site technical support throughout the event ensured immediate response to any equipment issues. Our team worked extended hours during competition days to maintain communication system availability for this high-profile international event.

Port Operations Communication

Barcelona's port handles significant commercial shipping traffic, requiring communication systems that support complex logistics operations across extensive terminal facilities. Mercury Barcelona has implemented communication solutions for port operations that enable coordination between ship operations, terminal handling, and ground transportation.

The port environment presents challenges including extended coverage areas, heavy machinery noise, and the need for intrinsically safe equipment in certain areas. Our solutions addressed these requirements with wide-area digital radio coverage, noise-canceling accessories, and equipment certified for hazardous location use where required.

Integration with port management systems enabled features like automatic channel selection based on vessel assignments and location-based dispatch optimization.
